NEWARK, N.Y. — A 65-year-old man is dead after Newark Police say he fell into the Erie Canal and drowned.
Police say the man was on a boat from Canada with his significant other and two friends. Police say they were sightseeing in the village when the man slipped into the water near Van Buren Street.
The woman on the boat was trying to find the man in the water. Police say the woman was reluctantly urged to get out of the water. The Newark Fire Department sent a boat out to rescue the man, but it was too late.
Police say the drowning is still under investigation, but appears to be an accident.
