GREECE, N.Y. — Volunteers gathered Saturday at Salmon Creek in Braddock Bay to tackle an invasive plant choking the waterway.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow was there as crews worked to remove the creeping water chestnut plant. Mat Morris, who leads the town’s water chestnut project, said the plant is causing oxygen levels to drop, killing fish and making the bay tougher to navigate.

The town gathered volunteers Saturday to set out on kayaks and other boats to pull the plant out of the water. Once the weeds are pulled out, the town weighs them to see how much of an impact it’s made.
After that, the Department of Public Works comes to collect the plant. Morris said the town is making sure to do this in a way that doesn’t lower water quality.
“This is definitely one of our more high-priority areas of the town because we have about 85% of the surface covered. This is about 40 acres of water chestnut right here,” Morris said. “There’s another three-acre patch up there, and it’s spreading every year. So it’s going to be larger and larger each year unless we do something about it.”
Morris said the last time they did a cleanup, they pulled out 2,000 pounds of biomass. The town has more cleanups planned, with the next one Wednesday at Buck Pond and another scheduled for the following Saturday.
