Like the players' futures, the future of the coaching staff is also not secured, as was previously reported. As there was uncertainty around the job, the renowned fielding coach, Shane McDermott, stepped down from the role of fielding coach of the Pakistan National Cricket Team.

Shane McDermott joined the team with years of experience in the field, almost one year ago, on July 4, 2025. After completing one year with the team, he left the job.

PCB will have to appoint a new fielding coach as soon as possible, as the team is scheduled to play multiple bilateral series and a multi-nation ODI series ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027. Shane joined the team under head coach Mike Hesson, who is still in effect.

The official confirmation is yet to come

As of now, there is no official confirmation or any statement made by the cricket board about the resignation. The LinkedIn bio of the veteran coach still reads, "Currently employed by the Pakistan Cricket Board as the National Team Assistant Coach", which is expected to be updated soon.

Before joining the Pakistan cricket team, Shane McDermott was associated with the Afghanistan cricket team. He worked for the Afghanistan cricket team for about 1 year and 7 months after stepping down from his role with the Bangladesh cricket team. He worked with the Bangladesh cricket team from March 2022 to January 2024.

Before joining the Bangladesh National Cricket Team, Shane McDermott was with the Sri Lanka men's national cricket team for more than a couple of years. Among his notable stints as assistant coach and fielding coach with multiple national teams, the South Australia-born served Cricket Australia as an assistant coach of the Australia A team for more than 6 years.

From 2005 to 2007, he was involved with Bangladesh cricket for their National Academy as the head coach and as the Strength and Conditioning Head Coach of the team.

Pakistan to play back-to-back Tests from later this month

Under his guidance, the Pakistan cricket team made visible improvement in fielding, which was considered one of their weak points for years.

At the end of this month, the Men in Green will face West Indies for a couple of Tests before leaving for England for another Test series. Pakistan will be up against England for a three-match Test series.

The first Test against West Indies is scheduled to start on July 25; ahead of that, PCB can announce the name of the new fielding coach for the team.
