Americans traveling to a popular Caribbean vacation spot this summer are being advised to remain vigilant.
The U.S. State Department reissued a travel warning last week for the Turks and Caicos Islands, which remains under “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” designation.
Government officials renewed a warning about crime and strict ammunition laws in the British Overseas Territory, which has led to some Americans being detained and unable to depart for weeks.
When it comes to crime, most incidents occur on the popular tourist island of Providenciales. However, police may have limited resources to investigate crime across the territory.
U.S. authorities have also noted reports of sexual assault.
Petty crime is common, especially in tourist areas. The State Department has said most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, such as purse snatching and pickpocketing.
Visitors are also urged to remain alert of overcharging and scams in tourist areas.
“You may encounter aggressive vendors,” the travel advisory added, in part. “Some will offer ‘free’ gifts that lead to money demands. Most sites have tourist police available to help in uncomfortable situations.”
Americans are reminded that possessing firearms and ammunition is illegal in Turks and Caicos.
“This includes single bullets and cartridges brought by mistake in carry-on bags or luggage,” the advisory added. “A firearm license or permit obtained in the United States or any other country is not valid in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
According to the State Department, police may strictly enforce the laws, especially at the airport when tourists are preparing to leave the islands. Travelers could be subject to arrest, jail time or large fines.
