Indiana state trooper shot by rifle-wielding suspect during pursuit identified

Authorities have identified the Indiana State Police trooper who was shot during the pursuit of a stolen vehicle in La Porte County before the suspect was found dead following an extensive manhunt.

Sgt. Justin Heflin, a 12‑year veteran of the Indiana State Police, was shot on Friday morning near U.S. 421 and County Road 300 North. State police said troopers responded to Interstate 94 to assist authorities in Berrien County, Michigan, who were pursuing a stolen vehicle that had crossed into Indiana.

During the chase, the suspect fired multiple shots from a rifle and pointed the weapon at officers. At one point, he exited the interstate and briefly evaded authorities.

Heflin later located the suspect’s vehicle near Interstate 94 and U.S. 421, and a collision occurred between the suspect’s F-150 pickup truck and the trooper’s patrol vehicle. Shots were fired by the suspect following the crash, ISP said, and the trooper was shot multiple times, though he did fire back as the vehicle fled the scene.

Responding officers loaded Heflin into a police vehicle and rushed him to Franciscan Health Michigan City, where he received initial treatment before being transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Heflin underwent surgery and was said to be in stable condition late Friday afternoon.

During the ensuing manhunt, the Lake County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit located the suspect’s truck in a tree line near Joliet and Wozniak roads, roughly five miles from the initial scene.

Additional gunshots were reported at the second location, where authorities said the suspect was contained in a wooded area nearby. Police deployed tactical teams and later found the suspect deceased in a cornfield, with injuries consistent with a gunshot.

The suspect was identified as Kevin W. Meyers, 54, of La Porte. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the La Porte County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday at 7 a.m.

A motive for the shooting hasn’t been determined.
