Rochester woman raises money for Venezuela earthquake victims in Caracas 16 days after disaster

HIGHLAND PARK, N.Y. — Rescue workers in Venezuela are still sifting through the rubble 16 days after back-to-back earthquakes hit.

News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with a local Venezuelan woman who is gathering donations to send back home. Nathalie Raven and her parents live in Highland Park and are saddened by what happened in Caracas, their former home.

Raven started organizing fundraising efforts just two days after the earthquake hit.

“There’s so many people who have nothing, and I could maybe try to gather some sort of funds. I mean I just felt like there was so much more I could do,” Raven said.

Two large earthquakes hit Venezuela’s northern coast on June 24. The damage largely affected the capital, Caracas, where Raven is from.

It took hours to hear back from her brother Juan, who is still there. Raven said she was frustrated being thousands of miles away.

“I think that’s kind of the reason why I started the GoFundMe situation because I felt so helpless and I wanted to help in any way that I could. And I knew that I couldn’t go there and like, help pick up rubble with all the other people,” Raven said.

Two days after the earthquake, Raven started fundraising. Her brother Juan and his wife Kristel are using it to buy and distribute supplies.

“There’s a woman who a video came out that she didn’t have anywhere to sleep because she lost everything, and it was her and her newborn baby. So we were able to get her tent, so that she could have somewhere somewhat respectable to stay,” Raven said.

Erin met Kristel on Zoom later in the day. Kristel told Erin more about the work they are doing on the ground there and the emotional turmoil the earthquake left everyone with.

With the airports still closed in Caracas, Raven said her parents are hoping to visit once it reopens. They had tickets to go the Monday after the earthquake hit.
