CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs bullpen wasn’t able to hold a late lead to complete the sweep in Baltimore last night, but hopefully, their shortcomings won’t matter as much this weekend when offense should reign supreme.
The Cubs, especially Ian Happ, love hitting at the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark. And for the most part, the matchups favor Chicago this weekend.
That is, unfortunately, excluding tonight. Shota Imanaga has looked better of late, but the Reds feast on lefties, GAB is extremely homer-friendly, and the wind is blowing out ever so slightly. Not ideal conditions for our fly ball-heavy southpaw. Likewise, the Cubs are going up against Hunter Greene. Fresh off the IL, sure, but he’s still Hunter Greene.
Let’s take a look at the Cubs lineup for the first of the final three games before the All-Star Break.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Alex Bregman, 3B Michael Busch, 1B Seiya Suzuki, RF Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Michael Conforto, DH Carson Kelly, C Dansby Swanson, SSIan Happ may love hitting at Great American Ballpark (.291/.393/.619 (167 wRC+) over 262 plate appearances there), but he doesn’t move up an inch in today’s Cubs lineup against Hunter Greene and the Reds. This will be Happ’s best chance to contribute this weekend, with lefties starting tomorrow and on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Seiya Suzuki moves back out to right field, with Michael Conforto coming in to DH. And with Carson Kelly behind the plate, Dansby Swanson moves back down to ninth.
These are pretty much the same decions/tweaks every day. If Kelly is starting, Swanson is ninth. If it’s Amaya, Swanson is eighth, Amaya is ninth. And if there’s a righty starter, Conforto starts, sometimes at DH, sometimes in right.
Cincinnati Reds Lineup:
Elly De La Cruz, SS Sal Stewart, 1B Spencer Steer, CF JJ Bleday, LF Eugenio Suarez, DH Tyler Stephenson, C Noelvi Marte, RF Edwin Arroyo, 2B Ke’Bryan Hayes, 3BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga, LHP
After a torrid start and a deep slump, Shota Imanaga has leveled off a little bit of late. He doesn’t look nearly as dominant as he did to start the year, but he’s also allowed only four home runs in his last five outings, which is a massive improvement for him (and three of those long balls camne in one game against the Mets).
As I mentioned up top, however, the Reds have been really good against lefties this year and GAB (with the wind blowing out) is a homer paradise. So your hope for this evening is that whatever homers Imanaga does allow are of the solo variety.
With that said, on occasion, Imanaga has been able to induce some more groundballs than usual this season. So we’ll see if he goes with that approach tonight.
Cincinnati Reds: Hunter Greene, RHP
Hunter Greene has made only one (ineffective) start this entire season as he was rehabbing from elbow surgery, but he had his full velocity and approached 90 pitches. So while there may still be some cobwebs to shake off, he’s clearly no worse for the wear.
And when he is healthy, Greene is among the most effective starters in MLB, earning a 2.76 ERA (3.04 xERA) over the last two seasons before this one.
