BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Neighbors in Brighton are looking for answers about when a new playground will be built behind Brighton Town Hall after the old one was removed.
The playground was removed around March 2025. News10NBC’s Chris Fortune went to the site where the playground once stood behind Town Hall, where a bulldozer now sits behind a fence.
“We would spend three or four hours at the park Saturday afternoons. My son loved the climbing equipment. It’s the only park and walking distance to us,” said Jude Hyzen, a Brighton mom.
The mom, who wanted to remain anonymous, lives a couple blocks away from Town Hall. It was a convenient spot for her to take her child.
“My son is, he’s intellectually disabled, and he needs to. He can’t. He doesn’t travel so well in the car. So having a park within walking distance is incredibly important to us as a family,” she said.
A new more accessible park is part of a few projects the town is working on, including renovating the community pool and installing a new splash pad. These are being paid for with state funds.
Neighbors in Brighton are frustrated with a lack of a timeline for these projects. Town Hall rec facilities were closed by April 2025.
“I’ve heard stories over and over again where people have been disappointed. And the sign on the pool said that the construction was going to start early April. Well, it’s about getting close to a year and a half,” the mom said.
Town Supervisor Bill Moehle discussed the playground project during Wednesday night’s board meeting after a letter was written to the town asking for a project timeline.
“I’m not in a position I can’t give you a finalized binding timeline. What I can tell you is what I have said. It is important that we have public input,” Moehle said.
But there is no set date for public input yet. Moehle said in the meeting that the town is working with the architecture firm it hired to get dates set up for it.
“Super upset that there’s no timeline on when public input is going to happen. I have made it very clear that anything that needs to be considered must be fully fenced to be fully inclusive,” the mom said.
Earlier Wednesday afternoon, Fortune reached out to Moehle and Rochester architecture firm LaBella Associates for a project timeline since it’s doing the design work for the projects. He had not heard back from either yet.
Moehle also said in Wednesday night’s board meeting that it wouldn’t be possible to open a playground with construction going on in the area.
