WEBSTER, N.Y. — A gold medal, the Professional Women’s Hockey Leauge’s Rookie of the Year award, and one season down as a pro. Haley Winn returns to Rochester this summer, having accomplished in a year, what most athletes would dream of in a lifetime.
“Kind of have to pinch yourself. Like it still hasn’t set in,” Winn said.
This saga began last June with Winn being selected second overall by the Boston Fleet.
“It was awesome. I mean, I can’t speak highly enough about the Boston organization and the people,” she said.
Winn went on to score 19 points as a defender and earned Rookie of the Year honors–finding out at the same time as everyone else.
“Yeah, it was there at the ceremony. So kind of had to have a speech prepared just in case, which is a little uncomfortable. You don’t want to jinx it or anything,” Winn said.
Between leading the Fleet, Winn also played in the Olympics and won a gold medal. If it sounds like I’m repeating myself, I am, because Haley, much like you reading this, has repeatedly been reminded on how insane this all has been.
“Like it still hasn’t set in that I went to the Olympics and won a gold medal. It’s pretty crazy to think about. Especially like, this is my first time really being home since everything happened. So for me, it’s like, kind of died down. But then I get home and it’s everyone’s first time seeing me. So everyone’s super excited and wants to hear all about it. So I feel like it never really stops,” she said.
This summer, Winn has slowed down to take in everything that’s happened. She reflected on a year where many of her dreams came true.
“It just been such a surreal year and it’s hard to put into words. So many dreams that I’ve had that have came true and also just trying to stay present, it just feels like, this is what I love to do. It’s not really work anymore. So the accolades and achievements kind of come with that. But at the end of the day, I just get to do what I love every day. With a lot of people that mean a lot to me. So,” Winn said.
Winn will enter her second year with the Fleet later this year, and is currently one of Boston’s three protected players as the PWHL expands to 12 teams this year. Boston’s new coach, François Méthot, is a long-time coach of Haley’s.
