Kristin Cavallari is teaching her kids about money in a somewhat unconventional way.
The mom of three (she shares 13-year-old Camden, 12-year-old Jaxon, and 10-year-old Saylor with ex-husband, former NFL player Jay Cutler) recently appeared on the ‘Aspire with Emma Grede’ podcast, talking candidly about being a working mom in the spotlight. Even though the Laguna Beach/The Hills star, who now owns her own business (lifestyle, apparel, and jewelry brand Uncommon James), has money in the bank, she doesn’t think her kiddos deserve a completely free ride.
“I really value how my mom raised me with money,” Cavallari told Grede. She continued, “So my kids don’t just get whatever they want. And if they want something, they have to work for it.” And yes, Cavallari’s children do indeed work. Like their mom, her children have an entrepreneurial spirit.
“So, a good example is last summer, both of my boys created their own little businesses. So, one of my boys was washing windows, people’s windows. And the other one was washing people’s garbage cans because if they want something, they got to go work for it. They got to make it happen.”
Cavallari continued, “I try to be very hyper aware of that because they are growing up in a very fortunate situation and I want them to know this is my money, this is not your money. And you know, something as small as they fly coach and I’m flying in first class, that was important to me when they became old enough that they could.”
Grede asked the celeb parent if it’s difficult to put her kids in coach while she’s in first class. Kristin responded, “No, it’s not when they’re older; I’m all bye. Bye guys, have fun back there, see you later.” She explained, “No, I think when they’re younger, you know, like kids, you can’t because first of all I couldn’t put my three in the back and I’d be like, ‘Please don’t fight. Please don’t fight.’ Who knows what’s going to happen back there. But now, they’ll be fine. Yeah. And it’s good for them. And I think it’s little things like that, as a parent, that ultimately make a big difference in the long run.”
Cavallari also talked about how she balances business and family, admitting, “You can’t be the best at everything that you do. That is true. There’s just not enough as much time in the day…I have chosen to be the best mom that I can be and be a good business owner, and that’s the trade-off. I would love to tell you that Uncommon James is a $100 million company. But it’s not. But I am the best mom, and my kids would tell you that also. And that, to me, was more important than being, you know, the best business owner on the planet.”
The former MTV reality star isn’t the first celeb to start a kids-flying-coach controversy. In May, Nick Lachey revealed to Andy Cohen (on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live) that he spotted his ex-wife, Jessica Simpson, flying first class while her kids flew coach on a trip to Hawaii. The pop star later explained, “My mom bought those tickets.”
