Some people who live and work near the Thornton Reservoir say there is a foul odor coming from it, and at times, the smell is unbearable.
“It smells like decaying animals. Like dirt. Like stale a garbage can,” said Nancy Hammer, a longtime resident of the area.
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District told NBC Chicago the “reservoir is part of a large, complex tunnel and reservoir system—one of the first of its kind and unmatched in scale.” The system captures stormwater, reduces flooding and protects water quality in more than a dozen surrounding communities.
The reservoir was at 94% capacity as of Tuesday, storing more than 7.4 billion gallons of water. According to estimates, it’s the most water that has ever been in that reservoir since it was opened in 2015.
“It really is a kind of putrid, foul, sour moldy. It is decay. It is pretty bad,” said Janice Modory, another nearby resident. “They planted some pine trees near it to try and help with the smell, but they haven’t.”
Darren Krencgarz has lived in Thornton his whole life. He said this is the worst it’s ever been.
“It smells like rotten sewage,” he said. “I have noticed that last week when it was hot and humid, that is when it was really bad. I just rolled up my windows. No fresh air for me, I guess.”
MWRD said their crews “have been closely monitoring conditions and have sent staff to conduct patrols in the area.”
However, despite the complaints from residents, MWRD said as of Thursday morning they “have not detected odors at Thornton Reservoir with this recent rainfall event.”
“Without the reservoir, last week’s significant rainfall could have resulted in increased flooding and other serious impacts. We understand that unintended consequences, including odor concerns, can occur, and we continue to work to address them,” MWRD said in the statement. “We encourage the public to report odors by submitting a notice through the MWRD citizen reporting app. Every report is investigated.”
