BUFFALO, N.Y. — A former Buffalo Diocese priest is facing federal charges after investigators say he possessed and shared child pornography.
Prosecutors say 46-year-old Jeffrey Nowak was placed on administrative leave in 2019 after accusations of inappropriate contact with children and harassment of a victim. The case was later closed after a 2023 search warrant investigation found no evidence.
Then, in late 2025, a new FBI investigation was opened, linking Nowak to an online group in Scotland where members were sharing child pornography in group Zoom calls.
As of Wednesday, a search warrant investigation seized a cell phone, laptop, iPad, a USB, and suspected drugs. Investigators say the illegal content was found on the devices.
The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo released a statement on Wednesday:
“Jeffrey Nowak was placed on permanent leave in 2019 and has not been permitted to function as a priest since then. We are not aware of any attempt by law-enforcement officials to contact the diocese regarding these allegations. In fact, the diocese has just learned of the allegations against him and will cooperate fully with any inquiry by law enforcement officials.”
Nowak will make a court appearance on Thursday.
