People across the Chicago area reported feeling the rumblings of an earthquake that hit Lake Michigan off the shore of the north suburbs on Wednesday afternoon.

The 2.9 magnitude earthquake began trembling around 1:40 p.m. CT roughly 20 kilometers off the coast of Kenilworth, Illinois, according to U.S. Department of the Interior’s United States Geological Survey.

    By 3:30 p.m., more than 50 people had reported they felt the quake to USGS. The most reports came from Highland Park, Glencoe and across the city of Chicago. Skokie, Libertyville, Wilmette, Evanston, Lincolnwood were also among the many places where people reported feeling the earthquake.

    Loves Park and Coal City were the farthest locations from where the earthquake hit that people reported it was felt as of 3:30 p.m., both over 75 miles away.

    More reports are likely to be made.
