"Sci-fi hasn't been done much in animation. And so, I really felt it was ripe to sort of find something fresh. And my favorite movies because, I'm showing my age, were all through the late '60s to the '70s," said the Finding Nemo director during the 2008 interview. "I just loved [2001: A Space Odyssey] and Close Encounters and Alien and Blade Runner. And I loved these worlds that just felt like they were just so complete, so figured out, and I'd get so engrossed in them. And I wanted WALL-E to feel like it was a movie that was almost found in a can from that same era."
While speaking to Tribute.ca, Stanton also noted he was able to give the film about robots and a destroyed Earth emotional depth through the connection WALL-E has with EVE.
"A love story, that's all about emotion. It's all about relationships and change and stuff," said Stanton.
