David Mitchell’s hit BBC detective comedy Ludwig has officially been renewed for a third season – before season 2 has even aired.
The BBC has confirmed that the series, which stars Mitchell as puzzle setter-turned-amateur detective John "Ludwig" Taylor, will return for a third run on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
The recommission comes ahead of the launch of season 2 later this year, following the huge success of the show’s first six-part season.
Created and written by Mark Brotherhood, Ludwig proved to be a major hit for the BBC, with season 1 becoming the broadcaster’s biggest comedy launch since at least 2018.
The first episode attracted 9.5 million viewers across its first 28 days, while the BBC has now confirmed that it has continued to build its audience since then, rising to 11.8 million viewers in total.
Mitchell will return for season 3 as John "Ludwig" Taylor, alongside Anna Maxwell Martin as Lucy Betts-Taylor, the wife of John’s missing brother James.

The series follows reclusive puzzle designer John Taylor, who is forced out of his comfort zone when his identical twin brother James disappears. Taking on James’s identity as a Cambridge detective, John finds himself using his unique puzzle-solving mind to crack murder cases while trying to uncover what happened to his brother.
Jon Petrie, outgoing BBC director of comedy commissioning, said: "Ludwig is exactly the kind of smart, distinctive, audience-pleasing show we love at BBC Comedy. Sharp writing, a compelling story, big laughs and, naturally, a generous helping of puzzles.
"The team at [producers] Big Talk have crafted something truly distinctive and much-loved, and we’re excited to see what mysteries Ludwig tackles next."
Season 3 will consist of six 60-minute episodes and will once again be written by Brotherhood, with Chris Foggin serving as lead director.
The first season of Ludwig is available to watch in full now on BBC iPlayer, while season 2 is set to air later this year on BBC One and iPlayer.
