As the Chicago Cubs prepare to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their 2016 World Series win, two of the famed champions will also be celebrating another major feat: running the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
Former Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo announced this past December he would be running the Chicago Marathon, set for Oct. 11, 2026, but he won’t be doing it alone. Former pitcher Jake Arrieta will also be joining Rizzo.
Rizzo will be running to benefit the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, with a goal of raising $100,000, according to his fundraising page. Proceeds from the marathon will go towards cancer research and resource support for children and families affected by cancer.
“In 2025, the event raised $47.1 million for local and national organizations, and we’re excited to contribute to that effort in 2026,” Rizzo posted on X in his December announcement.
As a cancer survivor himself, Rizzo has a long fundraising history, and running the 2026 Chicago Marathon will continue that trend.
“There’s an example of how the charity touches everyone, so we’re excited to connect with him,” Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski told NBC Chicago during the announcement.
Rizzo kicked off his marathon training at The Big Run event, held on June 3 at Shore Club Chicago, in partnership with Fleet Feet Chicago for Global Running Day. The event included a 3-mile run, followed by food, drinks and raffles. Ticket proceedings went towards Rizzo’s foundation.
Arrieta, on the other hand, got a feel of the marathon season after running his first marathon on Dec. 7, 2025, in San Antonio, according to an Instagram post from March 12.
“Many lessons were learned and the process will be adjusted in order to be more prepared for the @chimarathon on October 11th,” his post read.
Former outfielder Matt Szczur has also been challenged by Rizzo to join in on the marathon fun, but he has not confirmed his part, if any.
Those still interested in running in the 2026 Chicago Marathon can do so by choosing to run for an official event charity. The limited entries remaining will be first-come first-serve until Sept. 15 or until a specific charity has reached capacity.
Runners are required to fundraise a minimum of $2,200.
