Several legal groups will march at the front of the San Diego Pride Parade as thanks for their work on the front lines fighting for LGBTQ+ rights.
Civil rights defenders like Impact Fund, the Western Center for Law and Poverty and National Center for LGBQT+ Rights, along with three others, were selected as this parade’s community grand marshal. The cohort has been a part of the battle to restore gender-affirming healthcare at Rady Children’s Hospital.
“We began to respond to these unprecedented attacks from the Trump administration and have been on the front lines representing families to protect their access to healthcare,” said David Kane, an attorney at the Western Center for Law and Poverty.
The fight has seen some victories. In a court settlement, Rady agreed to restore prescribing puberty blockers so families would not have to travel hundreds of miles to receive care. Other lawsuits remain ongoing.
“We are hoping to set a precedent and say, ‘this is discrimination,’” said Imani Rupert Gordon, president of the National Center for LGBTQ+ Rights. “We want there to be case law and to be really clear for every judge out there that when this happens, that this is discrimination.”
KishaLynn Elliot, executive director of San Diego Pride, said the organization is excited to highlight these groups.
“This grand marshal award recognizes the attorneys and advocates that defend our rights in courtrooms across the country,” Elliot said. “There’s no shortage of that need.”
Lori Rifkin, lawyer and litigation director at Impact Fund, said it’s the clients who are doing extraordinary work for LGBTQ+ rights.
“We are really proud to be able to represent them and grateful to be able to represent them and hold that space for their bravery and what they’re facing,” said Lori Rifkin, lawyer and litigation director at Impact Fund.
Rifkin added that their “courage is contagious” and it is that kind of bravery that makes the civil rights work possible.
“It’s, I think, really meaningful that they’re willing to do it for the San Diego community and the California community, but also across the country,” Rifkin said. “Because it gives other people the hope and the courage to take similar action.”
Kane echoed that stance, calling the families serving as plaintiffs in these cases “an inspiration,” who by standing up to government or big organizations, are accepting the risks and dangers of doing so.
“They should be seen as heroic examples of how when the world is against us as LGBT people, it does take people to stand up in a public way … to defeat them,” he added.
Gordon said “this is what civil rights looks like” – a smaller group of people saying “this is not right” and acting on that conviction.
“Pride is an opportunity for us to celebrate who we are, but it’s also an anniversary of our community fighting back so that we can have the right to live in a world where we have full autonomy,” Gordon said.
To Kane, the honor of serving as a grand marshal has been deeply meaningful and reflects this year’s theme, “Pride Shines On,” which references perseverance in the face of discrimination and struggle, past and present.
“We’re following in the footsteps of other groundbreaking litigation and movement efforts over the past many decades,” Kane said.
Gordon said she is incredibly proud to be a part of this group of civil right defenders and making change in such a crucial time.
“I don’t think just being who we are is revolutionary,” Gordon said. “I do think that being proud of who we are is, I do think that fighting for who we are is. Those are the things that are revolutionary. Those are the things that we’re going to remember.”
