Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Steele is trying to make his way back onto the team’s roster from multiple injuries, and a young fan sent him the perfect encouragement.
That young fan, who signed the card “Tommy Lynch from Orland Park,” sent Steele a handwritten note hoping that he would recover from his injuries and come back to pitch for the team later this season.
“I watch the Cubs all the time and it’s much more exciting when you are pitching,” Tommy said. “I can’t wait until the second half of the season when you are expected to return.”
Steele posted a picture of the note on his X account, and had the reaction that basically every other Cubs fan would have reading it.
“Be right back. Crying,” Steele posted. “Cubs fans are the absolute best.”
Steele underwent Tommy John surgery early in the 2025 season, and while he had hoped to return to the team’s rotation for the second half of the 2026 campaign, Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer recently said he doesn’t expect Steele to be able to start any games this year.
Still, Steele is trying to at least make his way back into the mix as a reliever as the Cubs battle for a playoff spot, and they can use all the help they can get.
Steele was a dynamic starter for the Cubs over three seasons from 2022 to 2024, with a 16-5 record and a 3.06 ERA in the 2023 campaign for Chicago. He also made his first career All-Star Game in that year.
Unfortunately for Steele, his momentum was derailed in 2025 when he suffered an arm injury just four starts into the season, knocking him out for the rest of the campaign as the Cubs returned to the postseason for the first time since 2020.
There is no timetable for Steele’s return to the mix, but here’s hoping Tommy is able to be in attendance at Wrigley when the star pitcher gets back on the mound.
