90s Rock Band Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 38 Years After Forming

Nearly four decades after forming, Deftones are still finding new ways to climb the charts.

The influential alternative metal band has returned to the Billboard charts this week, with its landmark 2000 album White Pony re-entering the Top Hard Rock Albums chart at No. 24. The latest milestone continues a remarkable resurgence for the Sacramento group, whose music has found an ever-growing audience more than 38 years after the band first came together in 1988.

The renewed success follows one of the biggest achievements of Deftones' career.

In 2025, the band earned its first-ever No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart with "My Mind Is a Mountain," a milestone that arrived more than three decades after frontman Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter and their bandmates first began performing together.

The momentum has also sparked renewed interest in one of the group’s most celebrated albums.

Released in 2000, White Pony marked a creative turning point for Deftones. Expanding beyond the aggressive sound of the band's earlier releases, the album blended alternative metal with elements of shoegaze, dream pop and experimental rock, producing a collection that has since become one of the defining records of the era.

"We came off a couple of records that were pretty successful, but I felt like we had a lot more to do," Moreno told Louder of making White Pony. "A bigger voice, and really no rules."

That freedom laid the groundwork for a fun, yet productive series of recording sessions.

"I had a little recording set-up in the kitchen, and we'd throw around ideas real quick, and then do a little bit of work, and we drank a lot of champagne," Moreno recalled. "We'd have Mimosa Mondays, and then it turned into Mimosa Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Thursdays. We had a blast, seriously, hanging out and being young adults in a nice studio making a record that we wanted to make. We were living our best life at that time."

Moreno, who had up until that point been strictly the band's vocalist, started playing guitar. His rudimentary skills were a sharp contrast to Carpenter's deft approach, resulting in creative tensions.

"I suppose I came round a little to Chino's way of thinking when we were doing White Pony, and I like those songs a lot better now than I did," Carpenter told Guitar World. "I guess it's important to explore different directions, and it was time for a change."

Songs including "Change (In the House of Flies)," "Digital Bath," "Knife Prty" and the Grammy-winning "Elite" helped establish White Pony as both a commercial and critical success. The album eventually achieved platinum certification in the United States and is now widely regarded as one of the most influential rock albums of the 21st century.

Its impact has only grown with time.

Long embraced by devoted fans, White Pony has experienced a remarkable second life thanks to younger listeners discovering the album through streaming platforms and social media. The record's atmospheric production and genre-blending approach have also influenced countless modern rock and metal artists, cementing its reputation as one of Deftones' defining achievements.

"At that time, especially after Around The Fur, a lot of bands were coming out and the nu-metal stigma was starting to brew and we were getting tossed in with that whole category of music," Moreno told Kerrang!. "White Pony was our answer to it, just to get experimental and try different things and not follow any formulas that we had stumbled upon before."

Now, its return to the Billboard charts serves as another reminder that the band's legacy continues to evolve.

Thirty-eight years after Deftones first formed, the group is reaching new milestones while introducing classic albums like White Pony to another generation of fans. Few bands remain this relevant so deep into their careers, and the latest chart resurgence suggests Deftones' influence is only continuing to grow.
