Sanju Samson’s future with the Indian cricket team is in doubt as the opener has been dropped from the T20I squad for the tour of Zimbabwe. BCCI announced a fresh T20I squad without Sanju.
Because of the ongoing run drought at the bat, the team management dropped him from the playing XI to make room for the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made his Team India debut in the ongoing T20I series in England.
Sanju Samson, the best player of the 2026 T20 World Cup, whose burning form helped Team India win the trophy, is now on the bench and will have to wait for an uncertain amount of time before his next game with the Men in Blue.
While many cricket fans and cricket experts believe that the team management could be more polite with Sanju, former India pace bowler S Sreesanth supports the team’s decision as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remains in the team and is expected to play a string of matches for the national cricket team in the format. Sreesanth's latest comments on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi came ahead of India's 3rd T20I against England.
Did BCCI take the right call to axe Sanju Samson?
During an exclusive conversation with Ravish Bisht, he was asked, “Sanju has been dropped, and now it seems Sooryavanshi has taken his place. How do you see this change?”
Welcoming the change, Sreesanth opined that Sanju Samson needed to play better to protect his place in the team. The former fast bowler mentioned that the exclusion can be good both for Sanju and for the team.
“Look, I think Sanju needs to play better. When you don't perform consistently even against Ireland, there's no shortage of talent in Indian cricket. We all know how Sooryavanshi performed in this IPL. He deserved a chance. Better late than never. The way he faced Archer was amazing batting. Sanju has also done a lot,” S Sreesanth said.
“He did well in the World Cup, but it's been a while since he performed. So, just like I said about Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju will do well when he gets a chance. He's also realized that in Indian cricket, if he doesn't perform for a couple of occasions, there's a lot of competition. This is good for Sanju too, as he's realized he needs to be consistent,” he added.
S Sreesanth predicts Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's future
Further in the interview, Sreesanth mentioned that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the future of Indian cricket because of his immense talent and incredible mindset. He is confident that Sooryavanshi will win the gold medal for India in the upcoming Olympics.
“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the future. I want him to be given more opportunities. He's brilliant. His mindset is also incredible. I'm confident that when India participates in the Olympics, Suryavanshi will be the one to win the gold medal. Sooryavanshi and other players like him should be given more chances,” the former fast bowler said when he was asked to predict the emerging opener’s future.
