Sean Kenmore and Eric Rafla-Yuan met as chief residents at UCSD and fell in love. Ever since, they have supported LGBTQ+ healthcare through policymaking and education, despite going into different fields.

Kenmore is a clinical professor at UC San Diego Health while Rafla-Yuan is a psychiatrist and health policy leader at the American Medical Association (AMA), American Psychiatric Association (APA) and more.

In an era where LGBTQ+ healthcare and healthcare workers are under attack, the couple will receive Pride’s Stonewall Award for Inspirational Relationship.

Rafla-Yuan said he never imagined being honored in this way. Receiving this award with his partner by his side feels surreal.

“Both of us are standing on the shoulders of people who did much harder things than we’re doing so that we could be in these spaces,” Rafla-Yuan said.

Both share the same philosophy of advocacy: They believe everyone should do what they can in their respective sphere of influence.

As an educator, Kenmore wants to prepare his students to be more empathetic clinicians when providing care to LGBTQ+ patients.

When wrapping up in his class one day, he had a student approach him to share his appreciation for creating a safe environment for them as a trans person.

“Knowing that visibility and that precedence does impact people I think is really special and I feel very privileged to be in that position,” Kenmore said.

His focus has been building out an elective for residents to learn about day-to-day aspects of LGBTQ+ medical care. He said it’s important to have a LGBTQ+ voice when shaping these classes to ensure accuracy and realism.

“If you don’t include people with lived experiences, you’re going to miss a lot of key factors across the board,” Kenmore said.

Rafla-Yuan feels the same about representing those who feel they are overlooked or unheard when it comes to his governing position in the AMA.

Just a few weeks ago, he flew to Chicago to help pass the most comprehensive gender-affirming care policy in the history of the AMA.

“One of the things that we did in this was to try and make sure that there was representation in these decision-making bodies so that these issues never happened again,” Rafla-Yuna said.

With separate day jobs, they still find ways to collaborate and use both of their skillsets to make change side by side.

Rafla-Yuan called one idea Kenmore’s “brainchild.” Backed by their combined research and expertise, the pair successfully urged the California Medical Association to oppose conversion therapy on non-consenting young people.

“It is a joy to have someone who cares about the same things that I do,” Rafla-Yuan said.
