Bedard’s Shoulder? and Money? More Ducks Drama, Chicago’s Centers, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Happy Monday, Blackhawks fans. Development camp is now in the books, and the Blackhawks turn their attention to the ever-evolving financial situation around the NHL. There was more drama in Anaheim on Sunday (we’ll get to that), but we’ll have to patiently wait to see if we get any kind of update today on the shoulder issue with Connor Bedard.

While many in our midst are still up in arms that they haven’t announced a new contract for Bedard yet, I’ll remind everyone that there were lots of people wondering why he hadn’t signed is entry-level contract for almost three weeks after he was drafted. They formally announced that deal on Bedard’s birthday: July 17. We’ll see if they stay true to form and do something on his 21st birthday next week.

Scott Powers and Mark Lazerus wrote about ten questions the Blackhawks still need to answer this offseason. I thought their perspective on who ultimately plays center for the Blackhawks this season was interesting. It was framed around whether the Hawks would/could proceed with Bedard, Anton Frondell and Frank Nazar on separate lines. Here’s part of their response:

Ideally, the Blackhawks would like to have Bedard, Frondell and Nazar down the middle. That kind of center depth is what separates teams like Vegas and Colorado from other Western Conference contenders (see the Minnesota Wild, who have a ton of talent on the wings but a gaping hole down the middle). Whether that can be a reality likely depends on whether the Blackhawks can get enough offense from the players around them, as that trio comprises some of the highest upside on the roster. …

If [Oliver] Moore continues to show he’s a better option at center than wing, as he did last season, that might also impact Blashill’s decisions.

    — Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) July 2, 2026 One of the other pending questions for the Blackhawks is which defensemen play on their stronger side. Both Bowen Byram and Ian Cole are left-handed defensemen who can play their off-side and have frequently in their careers. That versatility should serve the Blackhawks well. But.. one has to wonder with the number of defensemen potentially being in training camp what that means for Kevin Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro, both of whom are still RFAs and can play their off-side as well. Another chapter was written to this NHL’s offseason Duck Tales on Sunday. Frank Seravalli reported that Anaheim was informed there was a pending offer sheet on RFA defenseman Pavel Mintyukov. At which point Pat Verbeek scrambled and signed the 22-year-old to a five-year contract that carries a $7.2M AAV. Now, if the Ducks match the offer sheet on Leo Carlsson, they’re… in a bad place financially.

After the Mintyukov deal (and provided they match the Carlsson OS) the Ducks currently sit with $9.973,395 of cap space according to @PuckPedia. And still have Cutter Gauthier to do.

    — Jeff Marek (@JeffMarek) July 5, 2026 I am in no way in favor of the Blackhawks doing the Ducks any favors with their cap situation, but an expensive veteran who might need to go to clear cap space if they match the offer sheet could make sense for Chicago. Chris Kreider (one more year at $6.5M) is interesting. I saw a couple folks online wonder if the Ducks would walk away from Carlsson at that number, take the four first-round picks and make a big offer to the Red Wings for Dylan Larkin. That would be interesting. Jason Robertson was one of the 15 players who filed for arbitration on Sunday. That means he can no longer sign an offer sheet. The Stars can trade him, however. We’ll see how that plays out. Could get complicated quickly for Dallas with the $18M number on Carlsson. The Penguins signed forward Egor Chinakhov to a three-year contract that carries a $6.25M AAV.
