Finding an affordable place to stay can be challenging for families who travel to Chicago for medical treatment.
That’s where a local non-profit, the Guest House Chicago, comes in. Located in the city’s Medical District, it provides comfortable, affordable accommodations for patients and their families throughout their treatment.
“It’s a hidden gem,” said Jene Larue. “I have been here since January. I just had breast surgery, and I’m, you know, slowly recovering. I’m also here for Parkinson’s treatment. The Guest House is such a blessing. With their compassion and the people here, I’ve been able to rest and reside in a place where I know I’m safe. They take care of you. They check on you.”
Patients are usually referred to the Guest House by their hospital or other partnerships.
“We are a life-changing, life-saving nonprofit,”said Dionne Nicole Smith, the director of development. “Our rates are at least half the cost of the nearest hotel, and no family is turned away.”
“Their social worker will say, I know a place that you can stay that is clean, convenient, affordable, and will provide a good experience for one night or up to a year,” said Adam Helman, president and CEO. “What we really try and do is give people some of that dignity and individuality back when they’re staying with us.”
Jimmy Williams and his wife have arrived from Texas.
“My wife came up here for a double lung liver transplant, and there is no way we could have pulled this out without the Guest House,” Williams said.
The Guest House also works with Rush University Medical Center and a program called Road Home for veterans and their families. Every two weeks, a different cohort comes to Chicago to get treatment for PTSD, and they’re able to stay at the Guest House.
“We need people to understand that there is a resource in your backyard. You don’t have to be from around the country. You can be down the street,” Smith said.
