Basements flooded, homes damaged in Chicago suburbs after Fourth of July weekend rain

The Fourth of July weekend brought torrential rain that flooded roads and basements, leaving many residents with plenty to clean up.

On Sunday in suburban Bartlett, neighbors were beginning the process of trying to figure out what can be saved.

“We heard something down in the basement. We were like, ‘Oh crap,’ and then we looked downstairs, and we actually saw a window break,” said Drin Latifi, whose family’s home was flooded.

Rugs, couches and other items lined the family’s driveway after torrential rain turned their cul-de-sac into what resembled a river.

One man was captured on camera trying to unclog the drain amid heavy flooding.

“It was about knee deep out here…My dad and my uncle they went there, my brother went there, and I think the whole cul-de-sac really just came together and helped each other,” Drin Latifi said.

Bartlett wasn’t the only area hit hard. The Bishop Ford Freeway was shut down for hours due to flooding, and crews were even struggling to clear the roadway on Sunday.

“I’ve been here 32 years, and it’s never been this bad,” one resident said.

Darien was also pummeled by the storm.

A silver sedan was left with its door open, its headlights barely visible.

Basements were completely submerged, and some appliances were left floating in the water.

Cathy Davis walked NBC Chicago’s JC Navarette through her father-in-law’s home, where memories were washed away.

“Our kids grew up here, my father-in-law is gone, but um yeah, it’s very emotional,” Davis said.

The family said their main concerns going forward are the forecast and the possibility for additional rain. After spending hours clearing a clogged drain, neighbors are concerned it could become overwhelmed again if more rain arrives.

“We already got hit very hard, and I don’t know what is coming and it is about to rain again,” Lorena Latifi said. “The window is still broken, we are working hard, but I guess is the water going to come back again?”

As people begin to call their insurance companies and sift through what can be saved, at least one neighbor is grateful the only things lost were material possessions.

“All we have to do is pray, that is all,” Latifi said.
