Child dies, adult in critical condition after shooting in Gary

A 10-year-old boy has died after he was shot during a family gathering in northwest Indiana Sunday morning.

According to Gary police, the child was at a gathering in the 200 block of Chase Street at approximately 12:49 a.m. when gunfire rang out.

    The child, identified by the Lake County Coroner as 10-year-old Montana Weathers of Chicago, was pronounced dead a short time later at an area hospital.

    Another individual was also shot. The 50-year-old victim was transported to a hospital in Chicago, where he was listed in critical condition, according to Gary police.

    Another shooting in Gary had occurred just 15 minutes prior to the attack on Chase Street, with six individuals shot during a gathering near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Hanley Street, police said.

    There was no immediate word on the condition of those victims, and there’s no indication at this time the shootings were related. An investigation into both shootings remains ongoing.
