After severe weather canceled many Fourth of July celebrations and events on Friday in the Chicago area, another round of storms could repeat that pattern Saturday, but there’s one caveat.
“We’ve already seen some fireworks from Mother Nature this holiday weekend and unfortunately we have more storms coming our way,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said.
While additional rain and storms are likely to hit many across the region, timing for the storms could be in favor of evening fireworks displays, though that is not a guarantee.
The next round is expected to hit during the afternoon and early evening hours, though some rain is still possible through the morning for certain locations.
The biggest threat with these storms will be lightning, torrential rain and damaging winds, particularly for areas south and west of Chicago.
Much of the Chicago area is under a marginal risk for severe weather, a level one of five, but some southern locations, including parts of Grundy, LaSalle and Kankakee counties, are under a more elevated slight risk, which is a level two of five.
Depending on how quickly the afternoon storms move, they could be out of the area “in time for late evening fireworks,” according to the National Weather Service, though some isolated showers and storms “can’t be ruled out.”
Parts of the region remain under flood warnings and advisories following Friday’s downpours and Saturday storms could worsen those conditions. Some areas have seen 3-5 inches of rain in the last 48 hours.
Several suburbs remain at risk, including Downers Grove and Lisle, particularly near the Morton Arboretum. Other locations include Chicago, Naperville, Cicero, Arlington Heights, Evanston, Schaumburg, Skokie, Des Plaines, Berwyn, Mount Prospect, Wheaton, Glenview, Tinley Park, Homer Glen, Orland Park, Hammond and more.
“Additional waves of storms may aggravate flooding today,” the NWS warned.
Multiple waves of severe storms Friday left a trail of damage across the region, with holiday celebrations largely canceled. More than 70,000 were left without power and downed trees were reported across the region.
In nearby tourist destination Lake Geneva, a boat capsized in a storm, leaving three children dead and seven people rescued as officials warned of damaged homes, downed power lines and scattered trees and limbs that overwhelmed city resources at an “unprecedented” rate.
More showers and storms could linger into Sunday before drier conditions move in for the start of the work week.
