ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A group of volunteers hosted a flag-planting ceremony at Riverside Cemetery to honor veterans ahead of Independence Day and America’s 250th birthday.
The ceremony got underway on Friday afternoon at Riverside Cemetery on Lake Avenue in Rochester. Team Marcus organized the event after learning that flags were not available for veterans’ graves and no formal placement was planned.
Organizers say they felt someone had to do something to make things right.
“We can’t forget our veterans because they’re the ones who’ve preserved our freedoms, preserved our liberties,” said Marcus Williams, organizer.
“It’s a beautiful, beautiful thing and I’m just so honored to be able to remember our veterans on this hallowed day,” Williams said.
Organizers say locals donated hundreds of flags in less than three days to support the effort.
