Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings in the Chicago area Friday led some suburbs to cancel or postpone their third of July fireworks plans, with others putting out messages saying the weather could change event schedules. And forecasters say more storms could be in store heading into the evening.
“We are all looking forward to our community celebration at tonight’s Independence Fest and firework’s display,” the City of Highland Park posted to social media about 12:30 p.m. “However, with the recent unpredictable weather conditions, the City and the Park District of Highland Park teams are watching tonight’s forecast carefully.”
The Wilmette Police Department posted a similar message about Friday’s popular celebration at Gillson Beach.
“Weather forecasts indicate there is a possibility of thunderstorms during tomorrow’s event,” the department posted in an update Thursday night. “The safety of all attendees, participants, volunteers, and staff remains our highest priority.”
Friday afternoon, the city of Aurora announced it was canceling and rescheduling the evening’s fireworks and holiday celebrations, with a rainout date already scheduled.
“With a high probability of more thunderstorms tonight, per the National Weather Service, combined with substantial portions of the City recovering from storm damage and still without power, the decision was made to reschedule tonight’s fireworks show,” the update said.
Roselle canceled its Independence Day celebration, though no rescheduled date was announced yet.
“Safety is our highest priority when making decisions about outdoor events and unfortunately the forecast for severe weather and rain this afternoon and evening creates significant safety concerns,” the suburb wrote on social media. “We know how much this tradition means to our community, and we share in your disappointment. Rather than simply canceling, we are already working with the many vendors, performers, technicians, and public safety partners involved to identify a future date when we can safely reschedule the entertainment and fireworks. Coordinating an event of this size takes time and we will share an update as soon as an alternative date is secured. We appreciate your understanding.”
The storms led to severe weather alerts, including a tornado warning in Wisconsin and several severe thunderstorm warnings across Chicago suburbs Friday afternoon. More than 40,000 were left without power during the storms.
And the NBC 5 Storm Team forecast showed more storms possible during the evening hours Friday, though it was not immediately clear how severe they could get.
Some areas have already seen between 3-5 inches of rain in the past 24 hours, so any new round of storms Friday evening could quickly lead to flash flooding.
More activity is possible overnight and into early Saturday, though dry time was expected Saturday morning. By early afternoon on the Fourth of July holiday, another system could roll in, once again threatening plans.
Orland Park officials told NBC Chicago the start of its “Liberty Run” could be delayed depending on how long the storms linger into the morning hours, but the race is expected to go on.
“We’ll know a decision on our Independence Day fireworks closer to the event tomorrow,” a spokesperson for the city said.
