As the song goes, "Ziggy played guitar..."
And then, in 1973, he stopped. But David Bowie's career carried on for decades thereafter.
To explain: Friday, July 3 marks 53 years since Bowie performed his final concert as his infamous alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.
Fans, bandmates and the rest of the civilization certainly didn't see it coming, according to reports from the early 1970s...
After 182 Ziggy Stardust concert performances, Bowie — who died a decade ago at age 69 — announced he was about to retire from live performing, but with a twist. The Ziggy stage persona was actually taking its bow, and not Bowie himself.
Only his guitarist Mick Ronson reportedly knew about the announcement, which came as a complete shock not only to the audience but the rest of Bowie's band and crew.
According to Rolling Stone, the creation of Ziggy dates back to the 1960s when Bowie met British rocker Vince Taylor, who had apparently "joined a cult and decided he was an alien god on Earth."
Bowie’s fascination with space travel and science fiction had already surfaced in such songs as “Space Oddity," and began developing a character based on Taylor plus other eccentrics like Texas “psychobilly” singer Legendary Stardust Cowboy, per Rolling Stone.
Bowie dubbed the end result “Ziggy Stardust," with the first name reportedly taken from a tailor’s shop that he saw from a train. The concept of Ziggy ultimately became an omnisexual alien rock star, sent to planet Earth as a messenger.
Last month, Parade reported on Bowie's song "Heroes," often considered a masterpiece by his fans — though it underperformed on the charts at the time of its initial release in 1977.
"Heroes" was the first single from Bowie’s album of the same name, but the song ultimately failed to break through on the Billboard Hot 100, believe it or not. Find out more here.
