Downton Abbeys Michelle Dockery teams up with Gavin & Stacey star for extraordinary new project this autumn

Michelle Dockery returns to the stage after a seven year break for the world premiere of Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy - a new play from award-winning writer Ava Pickett.

The Downton Abbey icon is appearing alongside Gavin & Stacey star Laura Aikman in this story about Helen of Troy's life in the aftermath of the Trojan War.

Dockery is set to play Helen, marking her first on-stage appearance since the National Theatre's Network in 2018, while Aikman is making her stage debut as Helen's childhood friend Cee.

The show is coming to London's Stratford East theatre and following the announcement Dockery said: "Ava is such an extraordinary voice in storytelling right now and I’m delighted to be part of this bold reimagining of Helen’s return from Troy. Stratford East’s history of bringing vital and ambitious stories to life makes it the perfect home for this production."

Aikman added: "From the moment I read Ava’s brilliant script I was desperate to play Cee. I think we can deliver something really gripping and I can’t wait to get started."

Ava Pickett is the mind behind the Olivier Award-nominated play 1536, which transferred to the West End's Ambassadors Theatre this summer.

Her latest piece was announced earlier this year with director Lisa Spirling describing it as "powerful, prescient and visceral."

The synopsis reads: "Years after she walked out on her family, Helen has returned home after a war fought in her name. Her husband celebrates, her childhood friend Cee does not. Over the course of this first fragile night of peace time, wounds reopen, loyalties fracture and the true cost of a woman's choice to leave her life is made clear.

"A play about friendship, motherhood, and what happens when the woman whose face started a war, returns home to finish it."

The production marks Spirling's directorial debut as Stratford East’s new artistic director and the creative team will also include set and costume designer Polly Sullivan, lighting designer Zeynep Kepekli, sound designer and composer Nicola T Chang, movement director Kloé Dean, casting director Juliet Horsley CDG and dramaturg Ed Madden.

The show is coming to Stratford East from 3 September to 10 October with tickets already on sale on the venue website.
