With the arrival of Silo season 3 comes an entirely new timeline – and a big clue as to how the silos were created in the first place.
The third season of the Apple TV hit, which has so far focused on the story of Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) in Silo 18, with brief flashes back to the past, will now take us back to the "Before Times".
As part of that, it's going to tell the story of Daniel (Ashley Zukerman), Helen (Jessica Henwick) and Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay), who we meet in season 3 in the aftermath of Iran setting off a dirty bomb in Washington DC.
But who exactly are these new characters? Here's everything you need to know.
Who is Daniel in Silo season 3 and who plays him?
Daniel Keene is a congressman, who is determined to do right by his people. He's steadfast in the knowledge that he is employed by the people – and it's them who he needs to answer to.
He was previously an engineer in the army and he also has a degree in architecture, which is set to become pretty important.
Daniel is played by Ashley Zukerman, an Australian actor who's known for playing Michael Sandrelli in the drama series Rush, as well as his role as Peter MacLeish in Designated Survivor, Nate Sofrelli in Succession, and Robert Langdon in the 2021 adaptation of The Lost Symbol.
In episode 1, we see Daniel surreptitiously meeting with his sister Charlotte, who's a Navy pilot, and hear more about his 'date' with journalist Helen (although clearly, it was less of a date than he initially thought).
Charlotte urges Daniel to join the Iran Committee – and to talk to Helen. He later meets Senator Thurman and her daughter Anna, and gives them her pitch to include him on the committee.
Charlotte, meanwhile, is ordered on a mission to Iran – which tragically fails. Daniel goes to visit her at a state-of-the-art facility where she is being treated for a traumatic brain injury.
View Green Video on the source websiteIn Hugh Howey's book Shift, Daniel was originally called Donald. When asked about this change for the TV show, showrunner Graham Yost indicated that it was down to Donald Trump's presidency.
Warning: Spoilers for Hugh Howey's book Shift – and possible spoilers for future episodes of Silo - below:
In the books, Donald, without entirely understanding what he was doing, had a key hand in building the silos and the catastrophic event that led every surviving person to flee underground and live in them.
What makes his story all the more interesting is that it's told over hundreds of years.
Following the building of the silos, Donald is one of many people to be cryogenically frozen, and woken up when there's a world-threatening issue that the current administrator of Silo 1 (the silo that has oversight and control over the rest of them) is unable to deal with - an issue like a rebellion, for instance.
That means we get to see Donald in various different stages of his life, and with various different levels of understanding about what's happened to him and what he's done to the world.
Who is Charlotte in Silo season 3 and who plays her?
The first we see of Charlotte Keene, she's on the platform of a train station, desperately trying to avoid a man she's spotted.
Charlotte is played by Jessica Brown Findlay, who's best known for her role as Lady Sybil Crawley in Downton Abbey.
In the aftermath of the Iran bomb, Charlotte is part of a mission sent to counter-attack Iran. But the mission fails in a big way, with Charlotte flying into a cloud of strange mist.
A sort of oil then covers her instrument panel, with the plane's mechanics failing her. Her plane goes down, but she survives, suffering a traumatic brain injury.
When Daniel goes to visit his sister, she asks who he is – making it clear she can no longer remember her brother.
Who is Helen in Silo season 3 and who plays her?
Helen Drew is a reporter who has been talking to Charlotte Keene about a story. In season 3 episode 1, Charlotte encourages Daniel to speak to her.
Helen is played by Jessica Henwick, who's known for her roles as Nymeria Sand in Game of Thrones, Peg in The Glass Onion, Aimee in Love and Monsters, and Ruth in How to Make a Killing.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times ahead of season 3, Henwick pointed out that Helen is only a minor character in the books, with the character being expanded for the TV series.
At the end of season 2, we saw an awkward encounter, which saw Daniel convinced he was on a date with Helen.
However, Helen ends up grilling him about a recent attack that was launched on the US, saying the country's citizens need to know if an Iranian radiological attack was launched.
Clearly feeling awkward, the congressman leaves – but before going, he gives Helen a gift he rushed to the convenience store for a PEZ dispenser with a yellow duck on the top, which we saw in season 1 of Silo.
