The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Rajasthan Royals (RR), gets major relief as the Rajasthan High Court has appointed the additional chief secretary in the state home department, Bhaskar A Sawant, as the sole administrator, suspending the ad hoc committee of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA), as per TOI.
The newly appointed additional chief secretary will join the state cricket board with a clear mandate given by the court. The court has directed Bhaskar A Sawant to arrange a democratic election within three months to fix a proper panel of officials to run the cricket board.
Since February 2024, the cricket governing body of Rajasthan has been operating without an elected panel following the departure of former president Vaibhav Gehlot. To fix the matter, the court has previously appointed an ad hoc committee. The ad hoc committee also failed to arrange an election in the last couple of years, which forced the state high court to appoint an additional chief secretary.
As per the court directives, the additional chief secretary’s primary objective is to organize the long-overdue democratic elections within three months. Without the presence of a proper panel of administrators, the relationship between the Rajasthan Cricket Association and Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC) had broken down in early 2024.
As the duration of the MoU was over and there was an outstanding due amount of INR 8 crore, the state council sealed the Sawai Mansingh Stadium and RCA headquarters, which cast uncertainty over Rajasthan Royals' home matches during the IPL 2024 and IPL 2025 seasons.
Why is the mandate crucial for the Rajasthan Royals?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) generally coordinates with the state’s elected panel for hosting matches in the Indian Premier League, but it made an exception in that case. The board resolved the Rajasthan Royals home venue issue by communicating with the state panel so that the team could play in Jaipur.
With BCCI’s support, the franchise was able to play in Jaipur in 2024 and 2025. But for the IPL 2026 season, they had to shift their base to Guwahati. Rajasthan Royals played their home games in the previous season at the Barsapara Stadium.
Major issues are yet to be addressed
If, as per the state high court’s order, the newly appointed additional chief secretary can arrange the election within the mentioned time frame, then it will come as a major relief for the Rajasthan Royals, as with an elected governing body, it will be easy for the BCCI and the franchise to make the conversations for hosting the matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium from the next season onwards.
There are a few other issues which are yet to be resolved for the betterment of cricket across Rajasthan. In the future, the constitutionally elected leadership will be able to resume the half-built Premier Chonp stadium project.
The remaining dues for the years are another major issue the state cricket board will have to address as well. With the newly appointed panel, the relationship between the Rajasthan Cricket Association and the Rajasthan State Sports Council will also be restored.
