Morgan McSweeney’s candour is welcome.
Speaking with deep knowledge from inside No 10, as well as years in Keir Starmer’s inner circle, he states repeatedly that Labour was unprepared to govern when it won power in 2024.
He accepts personal responsibility, amid his wider criticism of the Labour Party’s fitness for office.
Morally, it is a shocking admission. This is not a party political point. After all, Labour came into power on a pledge to end years of Tory incompetence, myopia and infighting.
No, this is a plea – again – for competent government.
It is morally unacceptable to arrive in Downing Street – after years of criticising Tory leaders – without a solid policy agenda and a plan to execute it. The problems were well known, the lousy economic legacy understood.
Privately, senior Labour figures were very confident they would win power. Of course they feared screwing it up somehow. But away from the cameras they spoke openly of their expectations.
Starmer revealed his talks with Tony Blair, and his own determination to learn from one of Blair’s mistakes. Blair said he should have used those first 100 days in 1997 – when he was never more powerful – to drive through greater change.
We won’t make the same mistake, vowed Starmer. Regrettably, for those who value strong and competent government, the rest is history.
In a few weeks, Britain turns the page. Andy Burnham, take note. You ask people to invest their trust in you, you better have a plan.
