Penfield asphalt crew says Yellow Alert heat is actually ideal for laying driveways

PENFIELD, N.Y. — News10NBC reporter Adelisa Badzic spoke to a local asphalt company working through the Yellow Alert heat, and the crew said this is actually the best weather to lay asphalt.

Adelisa met with Michael Tandoi and Gary Cuitaia at Cassidy Court and Jackson Road in Penfield to talk about how the crew is doing. Tandoi said he’s done this his whole life so he’s used to the heat in a way.

The crew did four jobs and each job takes about an hour. Cuitaia said it’s a team effort and looking after each other to make sure there’s no heat exhaustion and taking breaks as needed.

“On our way here we stopped at Abbott’s and got some ice cream. It’s like a team, you know, when you’re with a team you kind of rely on each other,” Cuitaia said. “We kind of watch each other to see who’s kind of struggling and then we pick up the weight for that person.”

Michael Tandoi, owner of Tandoi Asphalt, said the heat is nothing new for his crew.

“So this isn’t our first hot day to work. So if it’s 95 or 85, it always feels the same,” Tandoi said. “I mean, our asphalt material is 320 degrees hot. You know, at the end of the day, we only have six, seven months to install these driveways.”

The crew said this kind of heat actually helps make their work last longer. They know for a fact it’s falling into place and it’s perfect for longevity.

Workers can cool down as needed in their trucks, which have air conditioning. According to local doctors, heat exhaustion can develop anywhere from a few minutes to several hours or days of exposure to high temperatures and dehydration.

The exact timeline depends heavily on activity level, hydration and whether the body is acclimated to the heat.
