Nama launches RFQ process for US $1bn solar projects in Oman

Nama Power and Water Procurement has launched the RFQ process for the development of two renewable energy projects – Adam Solar Independent Power Project (IPP) and Sinaw Solar Independent Power Project (IPP) – in the sultanate that will add a combined 1,500MW of clean energy to the national grid.

The projects, being set up at a total investment of US $1.03 bn, represent the latest additions to Nama PWP’s renewable energy development programs that support the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, the national energy transition strategy, and the country’s commitment to expanding clean energy generation capacity while reducing carbon emissions.

Under the RFQ, qualified local and international developers will be invited to participate in the competitive procurement process for the development, financing, construction, ownership, operation, and maintenance of the two solar projects, said the Omani group in its tender notification.

According to Nama, the Adam Solar IPP is expected to become one of Oman’s first large-scale solar projects incorporating battery energy storage technology.

Being set up at an investment of around US $746mn, it will be integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The project will help strengthen energy security and support electricity supply during peak demand periods.

On completion, the project will enhance grid flexibility, improve system reliability, and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy resources into the national electricity network.

The other 500MW solar facility is being set up in Sinaw at an investment of US $$288mn. These 2-solar plants will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in Oman’s generation mix and support the sultanate’s efforts to achieve its long-term sustainability and carbon reduction objectives.

Together, the projects will play a key role in advancing Oman’s renewable energy ambitions, supporting the issuance of environmental attributes such as International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs), and enabling transparent verification of clean energy generation.

The project scope includes development, financing, construction, ownership, operation and maintenance of these solar power facilities in addition to the installation of utility-scale solar PV generation systems and the integration of battery energy storage systems for the Adam Solar IPP, said Nama in its tender notification.

The work also involves laying of grid connection infrastructure and associated facilities as well as delivery of renewable electricity to the national grid and support for renewable energy certificates and carbon reduction initiatives, it added.
