Joni Mitchell and Neil Young met in 1961 and became friends. It's no surprise that they influenced each other's music throughout the years.
Mitchell, 82, released her cover of The Circle Game in 1966. She revealed that she wrote it for Young, 80, who was feeling down on his birthday.
"The Circle Game" starts with lyrics about a child playing before time passes. The chorus reminds, "And the seasons they go round and round/And the painted ponies go up and down/We're captive on the carousel of time."
Mitchell told Broadside in 1968 that Young wasn't feeling good about becoming an adult. She wanted to paint a more positive picture of the circle of life.
"I wrote ‘Circle Game’ about a friend of mine named Neil Young, who was lamenting lost youth at 21," she said. "He decided all the groovy things to do were behind him now, he was too old to do them; suddenly he was an adult with all the responsibilities. He had been told all his life that all the things he wanted to do, they said, ‘Wait ’till you are older.’ Now he was older and he didn’t want to do those things any more."
Those responsibilities included school, then dropping out for his music career. Young wrote "Sugar Mountain," channeling his angst about the confusing stage of life, which inspired Mitchell's "The Circle Game."

'Sugar Mountain' Inspired 'The Circle Game'
Young told a live audience that "Sugar Mountain" that he wrote the song on his 20th birthday. "Oh, to live on, Sugar Mountain/With the barkers and the colored balloons/You can't be 20 on Sugar Mountain/Though you're thinking that you're leaving there too soon," he sang.
The songwriter's perspective on aging has changed since 20. He also released more songs about aging. "Old Man" from his 1972 Harvest Moon album follows a conversation between a younger and older man.
"Old man, take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you/I need someone to love me the whole day through/Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true," the younger man says. Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs influenced Young at the time. He still held Dylan in high regard in his 2005 Time interview.
"He's the master," the songwriter said. "If I'd like to be anyone, it's him. And he's a great writer, true to his music and done what he feels is the right thing to do for years and years and years. He's great. He's the one I look to."
Young's career has also continued for years. The 80-year-old singer-songwriter released an album called As Time Explodes, full of songs throughout his career, in 2025. He released a live concert film called Corduroy Plants on his website in June 2026.
