TAC Titans’ Shayna Elgart and Winskill Dolphins Swim Club’s Kelly Qi are set to start swimming for Vanderbilt University this fall. Both Elgart, a back/sprint freestyler, and Qi, an IM/distance freestyler, could have an immediate impact, as their best times would have topped Vanderbilt’s roster this past season.
Shayna Elgart
Elgart is a Raleigh, North Carolina native and a recent graduate of Needham Broughton High School. She is a 7x high school championship finalist and wrapped up her senior year campaign with a 4th place finish in the 200 free (1:50.51) and a 6th place finish in the 100 back (56.13). She also helped Needham Broughton to 4th place finishes in both the 200 free relay (23.85 split) and 400 free relay (51.12 split).
Her time in the 200 free was just off the PB she set during her junior year, where she took 5th with a time of 1:49.82. There, she also led off Needham Broughton’s 400 free relay in 51.37, a split that remains her best time to this day.
While Elgart hasn’t lowered her best time in her 100 back since late 2023, she came within 1.5 seconds of it when she posted a 56.33 at Speedo Sectionals – Cary in March of this year to take 20th overall. Likewise, although her 200 back PB is from March 2024, Elgart swam a 2:00.29 at those same Cary Sectionals to finish 14th, marking her fastest time since that PB.
Best times (SCY):
100 back: 55.26 200 back: 1:57.96 100 free: 51.37 200 free: 1:49.48 500 free: 4:58.22If Elgart can return to her 55.2/1:57 form, she will add much needed depth to the Commodores’ backstroke group; both times would have ranked 2nd on the roster this past season, behind only rising junior Aubrey Hull. Her freestyle will also make her a huge asset, both individually and on relays, as she would have led Vanderbilt’s roster in the 200 free and ranked 2nd in the 100 free.
Although of her times would have been quick enough to score at the 2026 SECs, as it took times of 53.78/1:56.82 in the backstrokes and 49.08/1:46.80 in the freestyles, she would have bolstered Vanderbilt’s 400 and 800 free relays.
Kelly Qi
Qi hails from Surrey, British Columbia and is a 5x finalist at the Speedo Western Canadian Championships. In 2024, she took 3rd in the 400 free (4:28.20) and 200 breast (2:41.37), 4th in the 400 IM (5:08.22) and 800 free (9:19.62) and 6th in the 200 free (2:07.77). A few months later, she attended the Speedo Canadian Championships and hit a 4:26.63 PB in the 400 free to place 16th. There, she also recorded top 16 finishes in the 200 IM (2:22.83) and 400 IM (5:02.19).
The majority of Qi’s best short course meter times were set at the Langley Olympians Swim Club Invite back in November of 2023, where she hit times of 2:04.41 in the 200 free, 4:21.07 in the 400 free, 1:07.27 in the 100 back, 2:18.08 in the 200 IM, and 4:47.80 in the 400 IM. Those remain her PBs today, although she has been as fast as 2:23.06/4:54.76 in the IMs this season.
Best times LCM (SCY Conversion):
200 free: 2:07.18 (1:51.69) 400 free: 4:26.63 (4:58.74)Best times SCM (SCY Conversion):
200 IM: 2:18.08 (2:04.29) 400 IM: 4:47.80 (4:18.63)Qi’s converted 400 IM best would have ranked her first on Vanderbilt’s roster last season by a comfortable amount, as rising senior Bailey Ratzburg had a team-best 4:22.31. Even though Qi hasn’t been 4:47 in some time, her recent 4:54 still converts to around a 4:24, which would have put her as Vanderbilt’s #2 400 IMer last season. Meanwhile, Qi’s converted freestyle times would have put her in 3rd and 2nd in the 200 and 500 frees, providing the Commodores much needed depth to their mid-distance groups.
It took a 4:17.8 in the 400 IM to score at the 2026 SEC Championships; if Qi can return to her 2023 form, she could give Vanderbilt points in an event that they had zero scorers in this past season.
This duo will join Amanda Vu (fly/back), Amanda Vileikis (breast), Matilda White (breast/free), Sophie Pham (fly/back), Sydney Green (breast/IM), and Brooke Miller (sprint free) in the Commodores’ class of 2030.
