A change in Illinois’ driving age restrictions will soon take effect across the state.
A new law aimed at changing the requirements for certain drivers will take effect on July 1.
The law, HB1226, will change the way senior citizens renew their driver’s licenses.
The bill, which passed the General Assembly unanimously last year, impacts how residents age 75 and older renew their licenses in the state.
Beginning next month, most drivers who are between the ages of 79 and 86 will not need to take a behind-the-wheel driving test to renew their license.
Another 79 and older will still need to renew their license in-person and pass a vision test, but only those 87 and older will be required to take the driving test — and do so on a yearly basis.
Drivers with commercial driver’s licenses (CDL’s) will still be required to take the annual driving test at age 75 and older, according to the law.
The bill also made changes to how often drivers will need to renew their licenses.
Those age 79 and 80 will need to renew their license every four years. Drivers between the ages of 81 and 86 will be required to renew every two years, and drivers 87 and older will need to do so annually.
“The Road Safety & Fairness Act is about replacing outdated assumptions with facts,” Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said in a statement. “Illinois seniors have consistently proven they are among the safest drivers on our roads. This law removes an unnecessary burden for older drivers while preserving strong safeguards to protect everyone who travels on our streets.”
The bill was praised by the AARP and several other groups, and passed the General Assembly in the summer of 2025.
