PITTSFORD, N.Y. — At the same time the Founding Fathers were laying their roots in the United States, an oak tree was laying its roots in a Pittsford neighborhood.

Anita Mance is the historian of East Rochester, which is near the location of the tree on Country Club Road.

“While I knew it was old, I didn’t know how old,” Mance said.

If the branches could talk, they would tell stories from before, during, and long after the American Revolution.

“This tree would’ve been here when the Native Americans, Seneca, were here,” Mance said. “The Seneca were in the area in the 1600s and later. The land wasn’t really developed until the late 1700s.”

For America’s bicentennial 50 years ago, Monroe County asked people in the area to let them know if they had old trees on their property. The county received 160 submissions, then narrowed it down to 12. Three were ultimately selected to receive a bicentennial designation. The other two trees are in Greece and Irondequoit.

“We know this tree, at that time, was 225 years old, so now, it’s 275 years old,” Mance said.

The oak tree is thriving. It stands at least three stories tall, and several feet wide.

A plaque at the base commemorates this living piece of history. It reads: “The International Society of Arboriculture and the National Arborist Association jointly recognize this significant tree in this bicentennial year as having lived here during the American Revolutionary period.”

“The fact that it is still standing I think is a miracle,” said Mance.

Kate Gleason bought the land and developed that neighborhood around the turn of the 20th century. She’s the daughter of William Gleason who founded Gleason Works and is likely a big reason why that tree still stands.
