Thank the Mets, Peterson’s New Groove, Thornton, Bullpen, and Other Cubs Bullets

The Cubs are back to seven games over .500 for the first time since May 22, when they were in the midst of their 10-game losing streak. Funny thing? The Cubs are now 7-0 against the Mets, which means they account for the entirety of the Cubs’ current distance from .500. If that sounds like I’m dumping on the Cubs’ record, I am not: so much of what makes a solid MLB team solid is the ability to beat up on bad teams.

Since earned runs became an official stat in both leagues in 1913, the Mets are the only MLB team to:strike out 10+ battershit multiple homersallow 0 earned runs…and yet lose the game.

    — Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) June 26, 2026 We talk about this a lot when guys move into new organizations, and although it tends to be more about younger/less-established players, it can be true for someone like David Peterson, too:

    — 104.3 The Score (@thescorechicago) June 25, 2026 That’s 10 years in one organization for Peterson, which is a very long time. This is the first set of new eyes on him, at an organizational level, in his professional career. That can make a big difference to a player with the right tweak, the right feedback, or the right support. And, as Counsell said, there’s also just something to the idea that it’s a fresh start. Although Counsell didn’t say this part explicitly, I will: Peterson was a guy who had to shake loose from the up-down swing role, which he managed for years, in order to finally break through as a starting pitcher the last two years. Then, this year, because of some brief struggles and a crowded rotation, he got bumped back into a swing role (on a very bad team). Now he’s coming to a competitive club that wants nothing more from him than to make consistent, healthy starts. I have to believe that’ll feel good, and will at least mitigate some of the challenges of switching teams for the first time in your career at midseason (at a personal level, we know that can be challenging for guys – finding a home, moving your stuff, figuring out family needs, etc.). More nights than not, Trent Thornton has gotten results – he did it again last night in the 10th. His 2.86 ERA is third best in the bullpen, behind only Daniel Palencia and Ryan Rolison. What’s funny, though, is that Thornton’s peripherals are some of the worst you’ll ever see: 11.6% K, 10.5% BB, 1.64 HR/9, 17.4% HR/FB, 48.5% hard contact, 9.1% barrel, 91.1 mph average EV, 24.0% CSW, 5.92 FIP. These are arrestingly bad numbers. If you hid the ERA and showed these numbers to someone, they would probably guess an ERA around 6. I love results, but the reality here is that, over a larger sample, if Thornton doesn’t start missing more bats – and cutting the walks and homers – he is very likely going to implode at some point. But don’t ignore that “if”! This is a guy who was returning from a major achilles injury, and who has been much better (by the peripherals, I mean) in the big leagues very recently. That could easily still be in him, and I don’t think we should say that, just because he’s clearly been lucky as all get-out so far, that means he can succeed only by luck going forward. No, no. His underlying performance CAN get better, and he can start EARNING those great results. You just hope that happens before the implosion. If nothing else, he definitely has the mound presence down:

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) June 26, 2026 Noticed while looking: 5 of the Cubs’ 8 relievers right now are in the bottom-51 of all relievers for FIP. That’s a really short-hand way of looking at things, and I’m not going to take too much away absent context. But, yeah, it is accurate to say the Cubs’ bullpen is teetering on the edge of disaster, and has been for a very long time. Chirp back or whatever, that’s all fine, but this was an odd choice for a visual message since he hasn’t, you know, actually won a ring (and the former team won theirs immediately after he left):

Bryce Harper wants people to know it was his ring finger that he flashed at Nationals fans who were chirping him all week"It's weird coming from a fanbase that I sweated for for seven years." pic.twitter.com/SvtPEQMtQM

    — Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) June 26, 2026 That said, yeah, it’s also kinda weird for Nationals fans to be hating on Bryce Harper. He left in free agency, but that was nearly a decade ago at this point. You’d think the relationship would now at least be neutral, or similar to how Nationals fans feel about any big name Phillies player. Also in that game, we now know what this would look like:
