Our hands-on review of the THINKWARE ARC700 covers installation, video quality, nighttime performance, parking mode, app experience, and whether its premium features justify the price.

There are a lot of things in life that you hope you never actually need, and I have to say dash cameras fall into that category. Living in Michigan, I spend a lot of time on the road between work, family activities, and daily life. I’ve seen everything from distracted drivers worried about tiktok and countless deer running across highways to just your everyday people making some truly questionable decisions behind the wheel.

That’s exactly why I was excited to get my hands on the THINKWARE ARC700 Front & Rear Dash Cam system. I’ve used dash cameras before, and while many of them do the basics well enough, they often feel like a compromise. Most have excellent video quality but terrible apps. Others have nice features but are frustrating to install. The ARC700 seems to combine premium video quality, advanced safety features, cloud connectivity, and modern technology into one package.

    Unboxing.

Right away, the packaging gives off a pretty good impression of what’s to come; it’s simple, pure and functional. Everything is neatly organized, and it feels more like opening a high-end piece of electronics than just your typical automotive accessory. Inside the box you’ll find the front camera, rear camera, power cables, mounting hardware, adhesive mounts, and all of the accessories needed to get started. Nothing feels cheap or thrown together. And the length of cable given is enough for all your tucking and routing needed for a clean install.

The cameras themselves are surprisingly compact. I like when dash cameras stay out of your line of sight rather than looking like someone mounted a bulky GoPro to the windshield and then takes a huge portion of your eyesight through the windshield. The ARC700 dashcam has a clean and modern appearance that blends into the vehicle nicely once installed. One thing that stood out immediately was the overall build quality. The housing feels solid, the buttons have a quality click to them, and the lens assemblies don’t have any of the looseness you sometimes find on lower-cost cameras.

    Installation.

If you’ve ever installed a dash camera before then this won’t cause you to have to call your mechanic, you should be able to easily install it with no tools besides the included trim tool. The front camera sits beautifully behind the rearview mirror, while the rear camera attaches to the rear window using the included adhesive mount, and they even gave you an extra one just in case you mess it up haha. Routing the cables most definitely takes the most time, and arguably my favorite part haha but that’s true of almost every dual-camera system. To hide the cords you have to tuck them in panels or the headliner, thankfully they give a really nice plastic pry tool to help with it! Using the provided 12v plug in minimizes install time and makes it much more user friendly as well, it also makes it a little less permanent than using the direct connect hardware kit.

I installed the THINKWARE ARC700 in my wife’s car, even though she doesn’t drive as much as me it’s still a nice peace of mind to have, and plus we did get a small mark on the front of her car that happened in a parking lot when nobody was paying attention. What I appreciated most about their choice on a slim and minimalist design was how compact the cameras were once mounted. The front unit virtually disappears behind the mirror, it has a disconnect mount that you tape to the windshield, and even comes with an extra incase you don’t get the placement just right, or if you want to maybe move it to your next vehicle. Lets add that they were able to add the vents into the mount meaning it could still dissipate heat as it should.

My favorite part is when my wife got in the car she actually asked me where I put it haha, you can see the one in the back window but the front isn’t making you sacrifice any visibility. The app setup process was straightforward and had me recording footage within a few minutes, probably a little longer than I expected but it still connected and showed the footage, being able to see live view front and rear and then you can also take a look at your recorded events and be able to save them to your phone right through the app. On the front mount you can also press the record button on it if you want to save a position in your recording so you can go back and find it later. I like this for many reasons, one is because I like to see how close I come to hitting deer, they are everywhere haha.

    Design & Build Quality.

THINKWARE has been making premium dash cameras for years now, and it shows that the ARC700 doesn’t try to be flashy. Instead, it focuses on being functional, compact, and long lasting. The front camera housing feels robust without being bulky, and the rear camera follows the same design philosophy. The matte finish helps prevent unwanted windshield reflections, and the 3m tape feels secure enough to survive years of temperature swings.

Living in Michigan means dealing with everything from sub-zero winter mornings to very hot summer afternoons, so durability is always something I pay attention to when evaluating electronics that live inside a vehicle, and you have to wonder how well this tape will have to hold up. In my experience with their other products, I’m not too worried about it! The ARC700 feels built for the long haul.

    Video Quality.

Video quality is the reason most people are shopping around for a dash camera in the first place, if everything was the same you’d be able to just buy anything, but there are a lot of companies with inflated numbers or overpromised features. If a dash camera can’t clearly capture license plates, road signs, and important details during an accident, then none of the extra features really matter, Thankfully, the ARC700 delivers where it counts.

Daytime footage is excellent. The colors look natural, the grass is green and the sky is blue, exposure adjusts quickly, and details remain sharp across the frame. Reading license plates at reasonable distances is easy, and road signs remain clear even at highway speeds.

What impressed me even more was the nighttime performance. This is where many dash cameras start to fall apart. Anything from headlight glare, poor lighting conditions, and high contrast are usually the reason you will get that watchable footage, so bright you cant see anything or just too fuzzy you can’t read the numbers on a plate, that defeats the purpose of a dashcam, you want 24/7 protection.

The ARC handles these situations remarkably well. During evening drives through town, the camera maintained excellent detail while keeping bright lights under control and the Street signs remained readable, and vehicles entering and leaving the frame stayed surprisingly sharp.

I found myself reviewing footage simply because I was curious how well it handled difficult lighting situations, and more often than not, it exceeded my expectations. Many people complain that the rear camera lacks in quality compared to the front, that being said, the rear camera also deserves its own recognition. Rear-end accidents are incredibly common, and having clear footage from behind your vehicle adds an extra layer of protection that many drivers overlook, i havent had it happen in my wifes car yet but my boss has another THINKWARE camera system in his truck and having the rear camera was a huge help in identifying a driver because it not only wanted them come up to us but then p[ass us and move into the view of the front camera, doubling our chances of finding them. After taking a look at the footage from  the ARC700, the rear camera isn’t as good as the front but it still is very impressive for its size, and records a very clear and legible image.

    Parking Mode.

Arguably one of my favorite features is the advanced parking surveillance. Most accidents don’t happen while you’re driving. They happen when you’re parked. Someone maybe backs into your bumper at the grocery store (like what happened to my wife), a shopping cart sneakily rolls into your vehicle, or maybe a distracted driver clips your car while you’re parked overnight at a hotel or airport, or even just a convenience store!

Parking mode allows the camera to continue monitoring your vehicle and automatically save footage if motion or impact is detected. All while doing so in a battery saving mode ensuring you wont come back to a dead car. Considering how expensive modern vehicles have become, having an extra set of eyes watching over your car provides a surprising amount of peace of mind.

    User Experience.

The real test for any dash camera is whether you forget it’s there. That might sound strange, but it’s actually a compliment, one I received the day I installed my wifes. Once installed, the ARC simply does its job, Every time she starts the vehicle, recording begins automatically. Every drive is captured, every parking session is monitored. So far there has been no random disconnects, no strange glitches, just simply seems to be able to just forget about it until I need it. And I think it’s safe to say that’s exactly what I want from a dash camera.

    Final Thoughts

The best thing I can say about the THINKWARE ARC is that it feels like a complete product., but to get the total experience, you might want to get the radar detector or hardwired for the total parking protection. That being said for just being a dashcam it doesn’t focus on one flashy feature while neglecting everything else. Instead, it delivers excellent video quality, reliable performance, and a polished user experience in a package that feels genuinely premium. Could you buy a cheaper dash camera? Yes yes you could but after spending time with the ARC700, it’s easy to see where the extra money goes.

If you’re a driver who spends a lot of time on the road, wants quality footage day and night, and values the peace of mind that comes from having reliable protection without the extra large camera and screens or overbloated features, then I think that the THINKWARE ARC700 is an easy recommendation. Thanks for reading and I hope I was able to help you decide if this was the dash camera you were looking for!
