Our Chicago Bulls may have opted out of the 2026 NBA Draft’s second round on Wednesday night, but they continue to bring intriguing rookies aboard nevertheless.
Beyond first-round picks Caleb Wilson and Dailyn Swain, Chicago has now filled all three of its two-way roster openings heading into free agency.
The latest addition? Undrafted former Alabama guard Houston Mallette, per Alabama men’s basketball and Blake Byler of On3.

Mallette is wrapping up an extended collegiate career. The Alameda, California native spent his first three NCAA seasons at Pepperdine, earning WCC All-Freshman honors in 2021-22. He transferred to the Crimson Tide ahead of the 2024-25 season, although he was still a reserve during his bonus fifth year in 2025-26 under head coach Nate Oats.
In 35 contests for Alabama (12 starts) this past season, Mallette averaged 6.6 points on .372/.355/.886 shooting splits, 4.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.6 swipes a night. Mallette becomes the third Crimson Tide player to join an NBA club this season, joining point guard Labaron Philon Jr. (the No. 22 pick by the Philadelphia 76ers) and guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. (an Exhibit 10 training camp deal with the Charlotte Hornets).
Houston Mallette Joins a Bulls Backcourt in Flux

Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesExactly who the 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard will be competing against for minutes at the back of new head coach Tiago Splitter’s rotation is an open question. Key 2025-26 Chicago guards Anfernee Simons and Collin Sexton will hit unrestricted free agency next week, barring an extension.
Point guard Josh Giddey and shooting guard Isaac Okoro seem likely to open up the season as Splitter’s starting backcourt, but if Swain is ready, he may challenge Okoro for that slot.
Mallette’s Summer League and training camp play could go a long way towards dictating just how much run he gets with Chicago proper to start the season. The Bulls adding a career back-up from a good college program may give this writer Patrick Williams PTSD, but such is life.
