2026 SPANISH OPEN TRIALS

Thursday, June 25th – Sunday, June 28th Son Hugo-IME Palma Municipal Swimming Pools, Mallorca, Spain LCM (50m) Meet Central Live Results

The 2026 Spanish Open Trials kicked off today from Mallorca, with the four-day competition representing the primary qualification opportunity for the country’s swimmers to add their names to the roster for this year’s European Championships.

Three swimmers already made the grade on day one, including Irene Ciercoles in the women’s 100m backstroke.

Just 16 years of age, Ciercoles stopped the clock at a time of 1:00.10 to grab the gold, clearing the Spanish Swimming Federation’s qualification standard of 1:00.38 in the process.

She held off Estella Tonrath, who settled for silver just over half a second behind in 1:00.64, with Sara Costa also clearing the 1:01 threshold in a bronze medal-worthy effort of 1:00.95.

As for Ciercoles, the teen’s time tonight shaved .09 off her former personal best of 1:00.19 logged in Hungary this past April.

The other woman who earned a European Championships-qualifying mark was World Junior champion Alba Vazquez.

Racing in the final of the 200m IM, 24-year-old Vazquez produced a winning result of 2:11.39.

That dipped under the 2:11.85 QT needed to secure her roster slot, representing the only competitor of the field to do so.

Emma Carrasco was next to the wall in 2:12.03, with Laura Cabanes earning the bronze in 2:12.79.

Vazquez has a trio of elite junior international medals to her credit but is still seeking a breakthrough European Championships podium spot.

Hugo Gonzalez, the 2024 world champion in the 200m backstroke, was the only male who put up a qualification standard tonight.

Gonzalez led the 200m IM final in a time of 1:58.95, clearing the 1:59.30 selection time on his way to gold.

Nil Cadevall and Alberto Hernandez were the only other swimmers to beat the 2:00 barrier, with the former logging 1:59.55 for silver and the latter collecting bronze in 1:59.69.

Although qualified for the European Championships, Gonzalez is still seeking the type of 200m IM performance that established his reigning national record – a mark of 1:56.31 put on the books in 2021.

    Additional Notes

Ivan Martinez got it done for gold in the men’s 100m backstroke, hitting 53.26 to etch his name onto Spain’s European Junior Championships roster. The men’s 400m free saw national recordholder Carlos Garach score a winning time of 3:49.01 as the sole swimmer of the pack to dip under the 3:50 barrier. Maria De Valdes proved too quick to catch in the women’s 400m free, getting to the wall first in 4:11.67. Sergio De Celis pulled off the upset against Luca Hoek in the men’s 50m free. The former posted 22.15, just .13 outside the 22.02 QT, touching ahead of Hoek who settled for silver in 22.26. Hoek nabbed the Spanish standard at 21.93 earlier this years. Maria Daza won the women’s 50m free, with her time of 25.18 good enough for the gold medal.
