Avatar: The Last Airbender fans have just endured a long wait for a new season of Netflix's live-action version, but they (probably) won't have to do so again.
The team behind the series was handed a double renewal back in 2024, securing seasons 2 and 3 to complete a new incarnation of Nickelodeon's legendary animated series.
That means they've spent the last few years working on both seasons back-to-back; a colossal undertaking, but one that will hopefully result in a much shorter hiatus before season 3 hits.
Young actor Gordon Cormier leads the Avatar: The Last Airbender cast as iconic protagonist Aang, emerging as a bright spot in the Netflix effort, which has gone some way to erasing memories of that M Night Shyamalan flop.
That said, it hasn't pleased everyone, with the general consensus being that the original animation remains the best way to experience this epic story. Fortunately, that's currently streaming on Netflix too!

Avatar: The Last Airbender will return for season 3 on Netflix, but there's no word yet on when the final episodes will arrive.
There's reason to be optimistic for a shorter gap between seasons 2 and 3, given that they were filmed back-to-back in a race to complete the saga before its young cast age out of their roles.
"When we started working on season 2, we gathered three forces: integrity, hope, and joy," said executive producer and writer Christine Boylan (via TUDUM) in November 2025.
"And here we are, almost three years later, wrapping the end of production with an immensely talented and devoted team that met those ideals and exceeded them."
Given the advanced progress already made, we'd predict that Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 could be with us as soon as spring/summer 2027. That's just speculation for now, though.

Netflix is yet to release an official synopsis for its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3, but it is expected to be based primarily on 'Book 3' of the animated series that preceded it.
Both versions end with this climactic third entry, so expect new heights of drama as we prepare to bid farewell to this iteration of the much-loved characters.
Notably, the animated franchise did continue in future-set sequel series The Legend of Korra, following the next incarnation of the Avatar, but Netflix hasn't expressed any intention of adapting this successor story.
