June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, dedicated to honoring the millions of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
As part of the fight against the illness, a 94-year-old woman who lives in Woodridge is doing what she loves to make a difference in the lives of thousands.
“My husband lost his memory, first his short term then his long term,” said Dolores Freudenberg. “Just towards the end, before he died in December of 2020, I just wanted something to do.”
Freudenberg turned her attention to the art of making intricate greeting cards.
“It is called quilling, and it goes back to the 16th and 17th Century,” she said. “It is an old art of twisting and curling strips of paper.”
Ultimately, she decided to use the cards to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association.
“I average about two a day and a couple take a little bit longer, but I love doing it,” she said. “The point is it is not just the money I am making for the association. It’s also meeting the people.
Freudenberg sells her cards at art fairs and other events. She has raised thousands of dollars over the years for the association. She also hands out literature about the services the it offers.
“It is so important to get the word out now,” she said. “ It is not just about research. They have resources to help families, or they can guide you to the right resources. Mission was very important to my husband, so I think I am fulfilling his mission.
