Our first summer heat wave of 2026 is brewing, and it could begin by the end of the weekend.
We expect Chicago to reach 90 degrees on Monday, which would only be the second time so far this year (it was 91 degrees on June 10). We’re expecting several consecutive days with 90-plus degree heat through next week.
While we don’t anticipate temperatures to reach record levels, the combination with oppressive humidity will make it feel like it’s in the triple digits.
The humidity will start to build Sunday afternoon, when heat indices climb into the lower and middle 90s. Dew point temperatures could climb into the mid 70s Monday and Tuesday, which means the humidity will be exceptionally high for the Chicago area.
Feels like temperatures could reach 100 to 105 degrees each day next week.
We’ve certainly felt hotter summer days in the past, but because of the duration of the heat, lack of nighttime cooldowns, and the fact that we’re coming out of a cool pattern the past two weeks, you should take the heat seriously.

Chicago Weather Aug 20, 2023What's the difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion? Here's a breakdown
There’s a possibility we get some relief right around the Fourth of July, but it’s too early to tell if we’ll get that pattern change in time for the holiday.
Storm threats:
With a strong ridge of high pressure to our south, upper-level steering winds will likely push storms around Illinois from Iowa to Minnesota and through Wisconsin. There’s a possibility we see a few pulses of nighttime thunderstorms, called mesoscale convective vortices (MCV), which could push into northern Illinois – it’s a byproduct of summer heat waves when we have high humidity.
MCV’s are difficult to forecast and can change by the hour depending on how they evolve overnight. So while there could be a few rounds of storms in the nights and mornings next week, be sure to check the weather frequently.
We should see another pattern flip into the second week of July. That doesn’t mean a significant cooldown, but at least back to more seasonal summer weather for Chicago.
