ROCHESTER, N.Y. – This space is usually reserved for our News10NBC In-Depth weather segment. This Wednesday is a little different. Today, I retired after 41 years as a broadcast meteorologist.
Weather has always been a lifelong passion. I am still amazed that I have been able to turn this love of weather into a career. While on the air, my goal has been to be clear, concise, and to get the forecast right. It took lots of practice, but I think I finally got it right.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to surround myself with people of the highest quality. You learn from these folks and use those lessons to make yourself a better person.
I would like to thank Stacey Pensgen and the entire weather team, the management at WHEC, and the numerous behind-the-scenes folks who helped make me look good. Believe me, I needed the help!
Over the years, I have written for the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper and spent many semesters as an adjunct instructor at Monroe Community College. But what I am most proud of is visiting thousands of students in our schools. I once had a prominent news person (and he knows who he is) tell me, “You do not win viewers over in bunches, but rather one at a time.” I have tried to do that every day.
I need to thank my wife, Eileen, who has kept me on the right path. When I went through the difficult transition from one station to another, she supported me throughout. I am also grateful for my two sons, Mat and Greg, whom I admire for their success and for the good men they have become. In addition, I am really looking forward to spending more time with my three grandchildren.
And lastly, I need to say thank you to you, the viewer. Because you made all of this possible.
