Normal People and 1917 favourites star in first look at new Sense and Sensibility movie adaptation

Fans have been given a first look at the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, which stars the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones and George MacKay.

The Working Title production, which is coming to cinemas in September, has been directed by Georgia Oakley, who won acclaim for her 2023 directorial debut Blue Jean – which explored homophobia in Thatcher's Britain – and comes from a screenplay by novelist Diana Reid.

Set in Georgian-era England, Austen’s novel focuses on sisters Elinor (Edgar-Jones) and Marianne Dashwood (Esmé Creed-Miles) – two markedly contrasting characters – as their lives are upended following the death of their father. Seeking financial security, the pair turn to potential suitors.

One of the first-look images (above) shows Elinor speaking to her love interest, Edward Ferrars (MacKay).

Another (above) shows Marianne looking distressed on a windswept moor, while another (below) shows Elinor gazing off into the distance.

Since her breakout role in BBC Three's Normal People, Edgar-Jones has gone on to star in Twisters, Fresh and War of the Worlds.

As well as Sense and Sensibility, other upcoming projects include the Simon Kinberg-penned crime thriller Here Comes the Flood and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Gabrielle Zevin.

Meanwhile, McKay is perhaps best known for starring as Lance Corporal Schofield in World War I film 1917.

Other notable credits include sci-fi romance thriller The Beast, comedy-drama film Captain Fantastic and True History of the Kelly Gang.

Creed-Miles played the title character in Prime Video's Hanna, and has also appeared in Dark River, The Sandman and The Chronology of Water.

Sense and Sensibility is released in UK cinemas on 25 September 2026.
