New Bears Stadium Buzz Building, Caleb’s Chicago Takeover, Loveland at Tight End U, and Other Wednesday Bullets

Chicago has another Caleb ready to take over the sports scene. University of North Carolina star Caleb Wilson joins Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams in being a guy named Caleb whom a championship-starved fanbase latches onto in hopes that he can help save the franchise. This could work!

Our friends at BN Bulls have more on the Caleb Wilson pick here and here.

I wonder if we’re going to get some movement on the Bears stadium situation. Reporting earlier in the week about the team and Illinois officials working behind the scenes for a stadium deal hinted that we could get something newsy on Wednesday. Today is Wednesday. Are we going to get something? If so, will it be worthwhile? Or will it be another nothingburger? Stay tuned. A potential timeline for a special session for Illinois lawmakers who could pull something together to help entice the Bears to stay in the state:

Legislative leaders have generally been skeptical of a summer session to tackle Bears stadium legislation. But if one were to happen, mid-August would make the most sense: t.co/gXKtx73XOA pic.twitter.com/dvPJ0zhzdp

    — Brenden Moore (@brendenmoore13) June 23, 2026 Some quality comprehensive reporting from ABC-7, which has some quotes from the two politicians serving as main characters in this storyline — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Hammond (Ind.) Mayor Tom McDermott. ABC’s Craig Wall notes that McDermott said on his weekly podcast that the Bears have been “in frequent contact with the team” and that the franchise is looking at three locations in the Northwest Indiana city. On the other side of the border, Wall snags this quote from Gov. Pritzker:

“They’ve asked for advice. And so our staff, as well as legislators, have offered them that. I think they’re looking at both of the bills that passed, the one in the House, the one in the Senate, hoping to put the provisions of each of those together in a form that they think will pass.”

On the one hand, it feels like Indiana is closer to getting a deal done than Illinois. But on the other hand, it can’t be that close to a done deal when the Bears continue to (1) let Illinois hang around and (2) have what sounds like serious discussions with the state. It is annoying that it took a public flop and Indiana’s involvement to get this ball moving. I hope everyone involved takes a look in the mirror and realizes how much goodwill they’ve squandered for the sake of trying to win a junk measuring contest.

Reporting from The Indiana Capitol Chronicle highlights a hole in the Hoosier State’s pitch by highlighting how Porter County officials are pushing back against a 1 percent food and beverage tax that would help bankroll the stadium project. A Hammond-based Bears stadium wouldn’t be in Porter County, so I can understand why it would be a hurdle to get locals to buy into tax increases that don’t directly impact them or their constituents. How about this for a palate cleanser?

FUN: #Bears TE Colston Loveland spotted working out at TE University. pic.twitter.com/TalJIcvW4A

    — Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) June 23, 2026 I love that Tight End University is a thing. And not just because you get a random Taylor Swift performance out of it. But I suppose that doesn’t hurt. In the 10 regular-season games between Week 9 and Week 18, Bears tight end Colston Loveland caught 47 passes, picked up 597 receiving yards, and scored 6 touchdowns. That would put him on a 17-game pace to catch 80 passes, collect 1,015 receiving yards, and score 10 touchdowns. I’d do backflips if Loveland can put together a season like that in Year 2 as a pro. And if I can’t do backflips, I’ll figure out something to do as an alternative. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images Our countdown to Week 1 of the Bears’ regular season continues:

We are 8️⃣1⃣ days from the Bears kicking off the 2026 regular season vs. the Panthers.Sam Hurd wore No. 81 during his 12-game stint in Chicago in 2011. — Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) June 24, 2026 Remembering some other guys who wore No. 81 for Chicago’s football team: Doug Atkins (1955-1966, Hall of Fame DE was an 8-time Pro Bowler), Jeff Graham (1994-95, His only 1,000-yard receiving season as a pro came with the 1995 Bears when he racked up 1,301 yards on 82 catches), Cam Meredith (2015-16, Chicago’s leading receiver with 888 yards in 2016), Ahmad Merritt (2001-03, His only NFL TD came on a 47-yard reception in a Bears playoff game vs. the Eagles in 2001).

    — Bleacher Nation Bears (@bn-bears.bsky.social) June 24, 2026 at 7:20 AM The reactions to the Chicago Bulls’ other first-round pick (Texas forward Dailyn Swain) are mixed, to say the least. Joshua Miranda has more on that at BN Bulls. I get why the Swain pick is getting significant pushback from Bulls fans. This team needs shooting help in the worst way. With that being said, I appreciate that the new front office prioritizes players with length, athleticism, the ability to defend, and a knack for getting to the basket. Should the Bulls surround this core of players with shooters elsewhere and Swain plays to his potential, then the pick will look brilliant. Following the basketball roster-building plan could be fun to keep tabs on as we kill time until we get some Bears news. Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks will *NOT* be picking fourth in the upcoming NHL Draft. That is because the team traded the No. 4 overall selection for defenseman Bowen Byram in a blockbuster deal that is being widely panned by fans and national media. Part of me appreciates the GM Kyle Davidson rolling the dice. But a bigger part of me thinks this is an unnecessary roll of the dice and reminds me of the kind of move the Bears of old would make when being pressured to do something. It reminds me of the Rick Mirer trade, but maybe this can go better for the Hawks than it did for the Bears. I’m not necessarily a fan of the deal, but I hope it works out.
