Showers and the chance for strong to severe storms are back in the Chicago forecast Wednesday, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
The rainy weather comes ahead of a major warm-up. Over Fourth of July week, temperatures are expected to heat up, with readings in the 80s and even 90s.
Early Wednesday morning, live radar showed rain and pockets of heavy downpours were passing through Chicago’s northern counties, including McHenry and Lake in Illinois and in Kenosha County in Wisconsin.
Scattered showers will continue through the morning hours, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, mainly saying in northern Illinois. Plenty of dry time was expected, though a better chance for showers and storms comes by afternoon and evening, Roman said, and some of those storms could turn severe.
At that time, much of northern Illinois was at a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five.
“Any storms that do develop could contain gusty, damaging winds and hail,” Roman said.
According to the National Weather Service, winds could gust as high 60 mph, and hail could be the size of a quarter.
“Otherwise, expect lightning, downpours and gusty winds with most other storms,” the NWS said.
Heating up for July 4
While temperatures will be in the 70s Wednesday, they won’t stay that way for much longer, as hot and humid conditions are likely to enter the Chicago area next week.
“High temperatures may exceed 90 degrees and peak heat index values may exceed 100 degrees for several consecutive days,” the NWS warned.
